The Marvels first reactions Jaw dropping cameos, ’surprises change everything

The Marvels teased in final trailer

Last night, The Marvels premiere was in Las Vegas, with screenings simultaneously taking place in New York and Los Angeles.

Ahead of the reviews in the next 24 hours (including Express.co.uk’s) there have been some glowing first reactions for the new MCU movie.

A sequel to Captain Marvel with narrative threads from WandaVision, Ms Marvel and Secret Invasion feeding in, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers finds herself swapping places with Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan every time one of them uses their powers.

Meanwhile, Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury is dealing with a wormhole linked to the Kree that’s allowing another reality to bleed into the MCU – could it be the X-Men as rumoured?

Whatever the case, the latest Marvel movie is apparently really fun, with some shocking moments that will change the future of the MCU.

All I wanted from The Marvels was to have a good time and that movie is stupid fun! Kamala, Monica, and Carol are so much fun together. The swapping, singing, and dancing played better than I thought it would. The cameos, my god those cameos! I’m so happy I saw this in IMAX!

Happy to report The Marvels is a blast. It’s fun, funny & the cast is so good together. Is it one of the best Marvel movies? No. But I had a smile on my face a lot. Definitely worth seeing in a movie theater. Also the after the credits scene is [fire emoji]. Excited for what’s next.

The Marvels is the most fun I’ve had watching a superhero movie in a while! It’s hilarious, action-packed & full of girl power. Kamala was a stand out & so many moments surprised me. There was a great balance of the team, while dropping shocking bombs that will change EVERYTHING.

Buzzfeed
Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani’s chemistry made this one for me — they had superb comedic timing together but also beautifully worked in the touching scenes

Fandango
Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels is a great time at the movies! It’s well-paced & full of frantic, hilarious energy. I even liked it more than 2019’s Captain Marvel. This thing moves! The location-swap action is a blast & the end credits scene is. I’m definitely a fan. Iman Vellani really does steal the movie, too. She does a good job adding that wide-eyed ‘Holy Cow!’ humour to the story – it reminded me at times of Spider-Man’s trip to space in Infinity War. Solid surprises, strong cast chemistry, unique action sequences, lots of Flerkittens and a light, breezy runtime. An MCU win in my book.

However, not all the critics were so positive about The Marvels.

The Direct
The Marvels is a solid MCU outing. Even though it doesn’t break the mold, and its villain isn’t anything remarkable, the movie is a ton of fun, and the leading trio are wonderful together. Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel remains an absolute pleasure to watch—more of her, please.

Phase Zero
The Marvels is a fine MCU entry. Carol, Kamala, and Monica are really great, especially together in very creative action scenes! First 25 minutes really rocked, exciting MCU stuff by the end. Villain is forgettable. VFX vary, both good and bad. Some silly scenes didn’t work.

Next Best Picture
The Marvels is pretty all over the place, with a truly silly plot, but still manages to be light on its feet. It’s often really funny, mostly thanks to Iman Vellani – a STAR. Fun body-switching action, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Not great, but far from a disaster.

The Marvels hits cinemas on November 10, 2023.
