Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Lauren Oakley perform the Quickstep
Strictly Come Dancing star Krishnan Guru-Murthy has announced a huge career change weeks after making an exit from the BBC competition. The Channel 4 journalist was eliminated from this year’s series in week seven, but enjoyed a memorable journey on the show.
The 53-year-old has now revealed he will be following his passion and launching a career in music, inspired by his stint on the competition. His other motivator was his 16-year-old son Jay, who performed at Glastonbury Festival with his band Askew.
Speaking to The Times, he explained: “I got him [Jay] into guitars and now Iām thinking of getting a band back together.”
The broadcaster has talked before about his musical talents and revealed he even met his wife through former bandmate Tim Hincks. Krishnan was partnered with Lauren Oakley and despite showing impressive signs of improvement during his time on the show, he found himself eliminated after facing the dreaded dance-off alongside Angela Rippon and Kai Widdrington.
When he was voted out of the show, he explained: “This has been the most incredible experience. I said it has been life-changing and it genuinely has.”

“I am incredibly grateful to the entire production team, judges, my incredible Strictly family up there. It’s right I am going out this week and I have got to get back to life.”
During his time on the show, he admitted he was often too serious due to his lengthy career as a journalist and that Strictly had allowed him to unleash the more light-hearted side of himself. His Couple’s Choice dance conveyed his lesser-seen side, and he impressed both Lauren and the judges with it.

Following the routine, Krishnan took to Instagram to express how much he enjoyed the performance. He wrote: “Our couple’s choice to You Can Call Me Al by Paul Simon was such fun to dance.
“Thanks to the choreography of @mattflint23 and @stephpowellbaxter the audience seemed to enjoy it and so did the judges. The results show is on tonight to see what the viewers made of it all. Thanks for all the messages of support x.”
It seems the programme inspired him to pursue his other passions as well as his successful career.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 7.25pm on BBC One.
