BBC dealt blow as Kuenssberg takes massive ratings dip after replacing Marr

Piers Morgan says Prince Harry is a ‘hypocrite’

Laura Kuenssberg returned to her Sunday morning show after a summer break and was joined by Piers Morgan, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Children’s Commissioner Dame Rachel De Souza.

It marks 12 months since she took over the role from Andrew Marr but it seems the move didn’t exactly benefit the BBC.

The latest figures from BARB, which compiles TV ratings in the UK, revealed The Andrew Marr drew in an audience of 1.9million per show.

However, Kuenssberg isn’t performing so well. Despite ratings staying steady at 1.5million in late 2022, this has since dropped to 1.2million.

Losing 700,000 viewers in just 12 months is certainly a blow to the BBC.

The latest episode, on Sunday 3rd September, saw Kuenssberg forced to cut Morgan off when he began to rant about Prince Harry.

Addressing his Netflix series Heart of Invictus, Morgan raged: “Does the public have any sympathy with Prince Harry for his relentless vengeful campaign against the media in this country, which we have seen again recently with what he said about the troops in Afghanistan – that the British media somehow didn’t support them.

“Absolute lie. Harry has gone around in this campaign against the British media spewing lies with his wife Meghan Markle.

“I don’t think the public here have any sympathy for their privacy.”

Morgan later added: “I’m not going to take lectures on privacy from a guy like Harry who has spent the last few years veraciously invading the privacy of his own family for vast financial gain.

“The guy is a shameless hypocrite and the public realises that.”

Kuenssberg cut him off, calmly explaining: “He’s not here to defend himself but you’ve made your view about him very clear.”

The past year hasn’t been without controversy either as Kuenssberg was criticised when Joe Lycett appeared to mock Liz Truss after her interview.

Truss, who was then Foreign Secretary, was sarcastically applauded by Lycett, who claimed he was “very right wing”.

He went on to congratulate Truss on the interview just days before she became Prime Minister who a short period.

Kuenssberg also faces competition from Sir Trevor Phillips who is helping to relaunch Sky News’ Sunday politics.

Addressing the figures, a BBC spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “These aren’t the right figures, as they don’t take into account the many people who watch on screens, phones or tablets and on iPlayer catch up, bringing the actual average to 1.5m, which broadly compares to Andrew Marr before the pandemic – it’s meaningless to use the extraordinary period of the pandemic as a comparison.

“We’re very pleased SWLK has become the weekend’s agenda-setting programme.”

Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg airs on BBC One at 9am.
