Matthew Perry admitted he ‘beat up’ Justin Trudeau out of ‘jealousy’ in school

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is one of the many to pay tribute to Matthew Perry and reflect on their time together as friends, even though the Friends star once admitted to “beating him up” while they were young.

Following the news of Perry’s passing, Trudeau, who grew up alongside the star when Perry’s mother served as a press secretary to his father, Pierre, took to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to share his grief.

“Matthew Perry’s passing is shocking and saddening. I’ll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play, and I know people around the world are never going to forget the joy he brought them,” he wrote.

“Thanks for all the laughs, Matthew. You were loved–and you will be missed,” he concluded.

However, while his tribute was heartfelt, Perry has previously admitted that he wasn’t always the nicest person to the eventual political figure.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2017, Perry admitted that he was a few years ahead of Trudeau in school, and shared that he had recently been reminded of times he had beaten up the future prime minister.

He shared he “wasn’t proud” of it and that it had been born of “jealousy” because Trudeau was “excelling in a sport.”

“He was the only kid in school that we could beat up,” he also said at the time.

“I’m not bragging about this. It’s terrible. I was a stupid kid. I didn’t want to beat him up,” he said.

He also joked that the experience may have helped Trudeau ascend to the level of power he did.

“I think it was rather instrumental in him going to such great heights and becoming the prime minister,” he said. “I think he said, ‘I’m going to rise above this and I’m going to be prime minister’.”

Since Perry’s death was confirmed, tributes have poured in from celebrities who knew him, including Trudeau, as well as his co-stars from The Odd Couple.

The main Friends cast has thus far remained silent.
