Real reason Dick and Angels Escape to the Chateau was cancelled

Escape to the Chateau: Dick teases Angel about the grass

Escape to the Chateau has been off of Channel 4 viewers’ screens for almost a year after nine successful series.

Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree announced they weren’t making any more series of their show earlier this year and left fans devastated.

Express.co.uk has gone back to take a look at why Escape to the Chateau was cancelled, how Dick and Angel dealt with the cancellation and where the family are now.

Why did Escape to the Chateau come to an end?

Deadline first reported that Channel 4 had ended its relationship with Dick and Angel back in July 2022 after concerns were raised about the couple.

An independent HR investigation was ordered by Channel 4 after Two Rivers Media, the company that produces the Escape To The Chateau franchise.

A Channel 4 spokesperson said at the time: “Channel 4 is taking an active role in challenging unacceptable behaviour in our industry. Following a review of our processes in 2021 we have made it easier to raise complaints both formally and informally.

“We require all our production partners to follow our Supplier Code of Conduct and when concerns are raised with us, they will be taken seriously and action will happen to ensure they are investigated and addressed appropriately.

“There is always more to do and alongside our suppliers, we are committed to building safe, inclusive and professional working environments.”

The publication also spoke with three of their former colleagues, who alleged that Dick and Angel had clashed with the producers.

A source said: “There has been a deteriorating relationship between Two Rivers and Dick and Angel’s Chateau TV for various reasons and it all came to a head.”

Another source added: “Producers turn them into this perfect, brilliant, funny couple. They’re that on camera, but that’s about it.”

Deadline obtained an audio recording, in which Angel could be heard allegedly calling a producer a “f***ed up little c***”.

Dick and Angel’s response

They said in a statement on their Instagram page: “It was a Strawbridge Family decision early last year to conclude Escape To The Chateau.

“We know there are lots of stories in the press right now. It’s not worth us even trying to comment or give context, because anything can be made into a good headline. We understand.

“There are two sides to every story and from the incredible support we have received, most of you know that.

“We are proud of who we are, and we feel we must do what we believe to be correct, that is in fact what kept Escape to the Chateau unique, and whilst we have indeed parted ways with Channel 4, we are hugely grateful to them and their teams for their support and creativity over the years.

“The future truly could not look more exciting and we thank you for your continued love and support.”

Have Dick and Angel sold their chateau?

Dick and Angel purchased the chateau in France’s Martigné-sur-Mayenne for £280,000 in 2015, but it had no electricity, sewage or heating, which is where their series came into play.

The stunning 45-bedroom mansion, Chateau-de-la-Motte Husson, is now a completely different property and the couple have not shared what their future plans are.

Their website describes the chateau as still “teeming with life and activity, not only courtesy of our children Arthur and Dorothy, who simply love exploring their very own ‘castle’, but with guests.”

Alongside their renovations, Dick and Angel also offer weddings at the chateau, but it currently has a two-year waiting list.

However, another one of their properties that featured on the spin-off show Escape to the Chateau DIY, is up for sale.

The chateau located in Saint-Maixent-l’ecole is being sold for around £710,000.

Where are Angel and Dick now and what are they doing?

The family of four will soon be travelling across the channel to the UK for their book launch, which starts on October 22.

The couple and their children will take to the stage for two “exclusive and intimate evenings” at The Bristol Hippodrome on 22 October and The London Barbican on 23 October.

Announcing their tour earlier this year on Instagram, they revealed: “Joining us on stage will be Arthur and Dorothy (yes, outfit planning has already commenced!).

“We’ll all be reading extracts from the book, chatting about the creative process of putting pen to paper, sharing memories, funny tales, and pictures that didn’t make it to print.”

The Strawbridge’s have also planned a UK theatre show titled Forever Home (avec le nitty gritty), which is set for 2024.

They recently posted an image of Dick, Dorothy and Arthur having a family day out in their magical Walled Gardens.

The caption read: “Hello to you on this Terrific Tuesday! We had so many lovely comments on our apple harvest pictures that we had to share the footage with you!”

Escape to the Chateau series 1-9 are available to watch on My4.
