I was a Squid Game Challenge contestant – youll be amazed how long it took to film

A Squid Game: The Challenge contestant has spilled the beans on the incredible amount of time it took to film the iconic game, Red Light, Green Light, in the new reality TV gameshow.

The Netflix series is inspired by the smash-hit dystopian Korean series, Squid Game, and features the same nail-biting challenges but without the deadly outcomes.

Just like in the series, a total of 456 contestants battle it out for the mind-blowing grand prize of $4.56 million โ€“ the biggest cash prize in reality TV history, according to Netflix. Eage-eyed viewers have even spotted a former 90s Gladiators legend taking part.

Created by the same people who made The Traitors and Race Across the World, Studio Lambert, the games in the series include Red Light, Green Light, Honeycombs, Marbles and Hopscotch. Sets were built to mimic those from the show down to the tiniest details and contestants live together in a replica of Squid Game's bunk bed-filled living quarters

Now Lorenzo Nobilio, 26, has revealed what it was like filming the iconic series at London's Wharf Studios, explaining that the spine-chilling games proved tough for many contestants as they 'felt real'.

"It felt like it was real – it didn't feel like you were in a fictional place," he explained. Of all the games, Red Light, Green Light was the toughest to get through, taking an exhausting seven hours to finish, for just minutes on our screens.

In the original game from the drama, contestants must inch closer to the finish line to be considered safe โ€“ but only when 'green light' is called, and a trigger-happy giant mechanical doll isn't looking.

When 'red light' was announced by the doll, they would need to freeze on the spot, winding up shot and killed if they moved even slightly. In the game show, contestants are eliminated in another, ingenious way โ€“ but viewers will need to watch to find out.

Lorenzo told the BBC about his lengthy experience, saying: "I made it past the line in seven hours, that was a very long time, but it's called Squid Game: The Challenge, it's not an all-inclusive holiday in the Canary Islands."

Viewers watch as contestants become ruthless and use a series of manipulative tactics to get closer to the cash prize. Each elimination of a contestant adds ยฃ8,000 to the prize fund.

A TV critic for The Guardian praised the show as one of the 'most gripping reality TV series since The Traitors'.

They said: "The real-life version of the Netflix drama is a grandiose, addictive spectacle that will have you shouting at your TV before the end of episode one. Squid Game: The Challenge not only works but may turn out to be the most gripping reality TV since The Traitors."
