It turns out that love is in the scare.

A new Tinder and Peacock survey has found that scary movies could be the perfect icebreaker to finding love online. Just in time for Halloween, the sites surveyed single people across the country and found that nearly two-thirds of respondents (63%) agreed that watching horror movies together is a great date night activity. Almost half of respondents, meantime, believe that a shared interest in horror movies is a sign of compatibility between partners.

According to the survey, the most popular date night horror movie was “Halloween,” followed by “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Chucky.” Rounding out the top five were “The Purge” and “Saw,” which now has ten films in its franchise, following the recent release of “Saw X.” Horror (69%) was the second-favorite genre to watch on a date, just behind comedy (71%).

Tinder is capitalizing on the renewed interest in fright flicks by letting users add “Horror Movies” as an interest on their profiles. Users on the app can search by interest badges to find similarly-minded people to chat with, and date.

Speaking of dating, 74% of respondents to the survey say it’s okay to watch a horror film on the first date. As for why they think scary movies are so conducive to dating, users say it not only builds a “sense of excitement and adrenaline,” it also gives people a chance to get “physically closer and cuddle.”

While Tinder is doing its part to let horror movies bring people together, Peacock has also introduced their “For You and Your Boo” date night collection that includes their most popular Halloween titles. In addition to the “Halloween,” “Saw” and “Chunky” franchises, Peacock’s library includes the 2023 slasher hit “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” and cult faves like “Paranormal Activity,” “Get Out” and “The Exorcist,” among others.
