Naga Munchetty was scolded by Chris Whitty on BBC Breakfast for interrupting him during a discussion on the UK’s new smoking ban.
The UK government’s chief medical adviser, who guided the nation through the pandemic and has, er, inspired Joe Lycett’s art, chastised the presenter for jumping in mid-way through an answer on Thursday’s episode.
Telling off Naga, the 57-year-old said: ‘Can I answer your question, Naga, because you asked an important question.’
The 48-year-old had asked Chris how the tougher smoking measures would affect older generations who have smoked for years, noting that it was hard addiction to kick.
Chris began to explain the ban would largely affect ‘future generations’ before Naga interrupted with: ‘Can I just clear this up?’
On Wednesday, Rishi Sunak announced the smoking age limit, which is currently 18, will go up by a year every year in an incremental New Zealand-style ban.
‘That means a 14-year-old today will never legally be sold a cigarette and that they and their generation can grow up smoke-free,’ the prime minister told Tory conference-goers.
He has also announced a new crackdown on vaping, vowing to scrutinise ‘flavours, packaging, displays and disposable vapes’.
Adding that data suggests one in five children now use e-cigarettes, Sunak said: ‘That is shocking and wrong. And we must act before it becomes endemic.’
Fortunately, Chris was much better behaved than a recent – and unwelcome – guest on BBC Breakfast.
Naga actually struggled to maintain her composure on the morning news show when showed a video of a man’s unfortunate run-in with a pigeon.
The presenter ended up wiping away tears and declaring she was ‘sweating’ when a hilarious video of a bird flying right into the head of an unsuspecting man was played.
We shouldn’t, but we’re laughing too.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6am on BBC One.
