Miriam Margolyes has expressed her regret over a comment she made to Matthew Perry during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
The Harry Potter actress, 82, appeared on the hit BBC show alongside the Friends actor, 54, and one of the most memorable moments from the series was when she shocked the crowd after admitting she had never seen an episode of the American sitcom.
Miriam hilariously recalled the moment she moment she met Sir Lawrence Olivier and becoming so overwhelmed that she ‘started to cream in my knickers’ – which made the Chandler Bing star very ‘uncomfortable.’
However, in the latest set of quotes from Oh Miriam: Stories from an Extraordinary Life, she revealed her guilt after asking whether Matthew ‘was an alcoholic.’
As reported by The Independent, Miriam wrote:’ Matthew was expecting a bland conversation that stayed on the surface of things, but I was warming to my theme and immediately launched in, burrowing deeper.’
‘On reflection, I really wish I hadn’t,’ said Miriam, adding this was one of the few times she ‘didn’t quite mesh’ with another guest on a chat show’.
Mattew discussed his lengthy struggles with substance abuse that began in the 1990s when promoting his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.
He told US TV host Diane Sawyer in an interview that he attended thousands of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
He also explained in the hour-long discussion that his weight fluctuated during his years on Friends based on his addictions at the time.
Matthew lost and gained several pounds between 1997 and 2001 and has confessed in recent years that he cannot recall filming many episodes of the hit sitcom.
In her memoir, Miriam also claimed that former co-star Steve Martin hit her while being careless with a fake punch on the set of the 1986 movie Little Shop of Horrors.
Only Murders in the Building actor Steve insisted he used ‘extreme caution.’
