A major touring exhibition on Mickalene Thomas will be going on view in 2024. Starting at The Broad in Los Angeles and following through to the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia and Hayward Gallery in London, the show will encompass her multi-disciplinary practice across painting, sculpture, film and installation. Based in Brooklyn, Thomas is often inspired her 1970s childhood in the way she creates flowery depictions of African American identity and Black female beauty.
All About Love, which references Patricia Collins 2000 essay of the same name, provides a comprehensive look at how Thomas subverts the conventions of art history to reclaim a semblance of love and desire, by drawing on female empowerment and Black feminist theory.
“The opportunity to showcase and tour my work across these leading art institutions marks a key milestone in my career as an artist,” noted Thomas in a statement. “Each presentation uniquely navigates through the nuances of my work while cohesively investigating notions and topics at the core of my artistic practice. I am grateful for this incredible platform staged in cultural epicenters in the US and the UK and confident about the long-lasting impact of this show on a broader audience internationally.”
The exhibition will kick off at The Broad in LA from May 25 to September 29, 2024, followed by a stop at Philly’s Barnes Foundation from October 20 to January 12, 2025 and concluding at Hayward Gallery in London from February 10 to May 5, 2025.
