Hideo Kojima has long reigned over the action-adventure genre with titles such as Metal Gear, Zone of the Enders and Snatcher. For its next effort, however, the game creator has created a horror game that promises to truly frighten players.
The game is called OD – a switch from its original title of Overdose – and was previewed at the Game Awards 2023. Kojima Productions is developing OD in partnership with Xbox Studios.
The 90-second trailer features actors Hunter Schafer, Sophia Lillis and Udo Kier in a pitch-dark room reading nursery rhymes while growing increasingly panicked. There’s the sound of a door opening and Lillis screams before the video cuts.
While that may not give much in the way of plot, it’s an intriguing first look at the expected fear factor Kojima is aiming to deliver with OD. It also gives a feel for the cinematic elements of the game, a high bar given that Get Out director Jordan Peele is working on its development.
“We are working with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology to take on the challenge of creating a very unique, immersive, and totally new style of game – or rather, a new form of media,” Kojima said.
