The Crown: Meghan and Harry have given Netflix ‘gold’ says Phillips

Kate Middleton has had ties with the Royal Family years before she married Prince William.

The Princess of Wales’ early romance with the future King plays an integral part in The Crown season six, part two, which came out on Thursday, December 14.

In episode seven, Alma Mater, there is a fictional scene where a 15-year-old Kate meets a young Prince William (played by Rufus Kampa) as he’s selling copies of the Big Issue with Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki).

Kate is then seen talking to her mum Carole Middleton (Eve Best) about the prince, encouraging her daughter to believe she could end up with someone like him.

Expanding on her point, Carole talks about her husband Michael Middleton who has surprising connections to the Royal Family.

How was Kate Middleton connected to the royals before meeting Prince William?

In The Crown, Carole tells Kate: “When I first met your father he was way out of my league. I was just a lowly stewardess, trolly dolly.

“His grandmother had been friendly with the Queen’s aunt. His father was an RAF pilot who flown with Prince Philip. I felt like the luckiest woman in the world.”

While some elements of the Netflix drama have been created for entertainment purposes, these comments are actually true.

Kate’s paternal grandfather Peter Middleton was an RAF fighter pilot during the Second World War and in October 1966, he flew from South America to London with Prince Philip on board the plane.

Peter then went on to get even more acquainted with the late Duke of Edinburgh when he was his co-pilot during his two-month tour of South America in 1962.

Captain Peter Middleton died aged 90, just a few days before Kate and Prince William announced their engagement in 2010.

He reportedly received a letter of thanks from Prince Philip for his service on the tour, as well as a pair of gold cufflinks.

This isn’t the only connection either as Kate’s great-grandmother Olive Middleton was friends with the Queen’s aunt, Princess Mary.

Olive, whose maiden name was Lupton, married solicitor Noel Middleton in 1914 and her solicitor husband co-founded the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra with the princess and her son George Lascelles as patrons.
