The countdown to Christmas is officially on.

Now as the festivities are fast approaching, the motoring experts at Vanarama are warning drivers to take extra care. Driving in winter could get tricky with the icy roads.

The jolly season is already quite expensive so it's crucial to avoid driving mistakes so you don't have to pay out a staggering £12,200.

So here are five important mistakes to avoid this festive season…

    1. Christmas tree – £5,000 fine

Going to pick up your Christmas tree can be fun, but it could get dangerous on the roads. It can lead to a £5,000 fine for careless and inconsiderate driving.

According to the Highway Code, Rule 98 states "you must not overload your vehicle" as well as "you must secure your load and it must not stick out dangerously".

You could have to pay a minimum of £100 fine, as well as three points on your licence. If the case goes to court, you could face a fine of up to £5,000, as well as being disqualified from driving.

    2. Flashing lights – £200

Did you know adding any lights to your car could get you into trouble? In the UK, you are legally required to have white or yellow headlights, as well as red rear tail lights.

It's important to check the Roads Vehicles Lighting Regulations Act to make sure which colours are legal and not going to distract other drivers.

You could end up with a fixed penalty notice which is an on-the-spot £200 for careless or inconsiderate driving or it's an unlimited fine, disqualification or imprisonment if you're driving dangerously.
