A young woman has been left feeling like she has nothing to wear to an upcoming wedding after her friends slammed her chosen outfit.

The woman chose a $270 dress by ‘Reformation’ a trendy Los Angeles brand – but to her shock when she showed her pals they told her the look was a ‘big no, no’.

Taking to Reddit the frustrated wedding guest explained the off-shoulder, tea-length party dress was black – which appeared to be the problem.

She explained she lives in Australia now – so thought the dress would be fine for the formal occasion – but her friends back home were adamant it was inappropriate.

A young woman was slammed by friends after revealing she would be wearing this dress to a wedding

The question left the people of Reddit divided.

‘If they’re really traditional, then no. If it’s going to be hot or sunny, in a church, or it’s a daytime wedding, no. If they’re going for a casual, boho, or beachy vibe? No,’ one woman slammed.

‘Black is for funerals. And red is for those who slept with the groom,’ said another.

A third stated: ‘Traditionally to wear black means you don’t approve of the union.’

But Australians appeared to back the young woman up on her choice of outfit.

‘I think I have almost exclusively worn some type of black dress to every wedding I’ve been to in Melbourne,’ one woman said.’

‘I have almost exclusively worn black as a guest to weddings as an adult, wore back as a bride at my own wedding, and looks like there’s a good chance I’ll be wearing black as a bridesmaid at my sister’s,’ said another.

A third added: ‘Love this – I never even knew it was a thing not to wear black! There’s always so many of us in little black dresses at Melbourne weddings.’

Others suggested the correct answer can only be given by the bride – as it is up to her what is and isn’t acceptable.

‘Ask the bride. It’s fine for some people, really bad for others and it is hard to tell who will have family that will be pissed off.’

Some said the ‘vibe’ of the wedding provides people with clues so they can make an educated guess.

‘If it is a daytime wedding in a sunny venue, like a garden then no. If it is in the evening and is cocktail or formal themed – or at a winery then yes,’ they said.

The young woman said dark blue was her first choice but it made her ‘look yellow’ due to her olive skin.

She added she doesn’t ‘personally know’ the bride or groom and is a plus one.

‘I asked my partner to ask and he never did.’
