A female journalist was shocked to discover she wasn’t getting paid for a discussion about equality in the media – but her male counterpart was.

Moya Lothian-McLean, a contributing editor at Novara Media, and GB News contributor Connor Tomlinson were invited on Sky News on Wednesday (September 27) following Laurence Fox’s misogynistic rant about Ava Evans.

The two journalists were debating the state of the broadcasting landscape after Fox was suspended from GB News after making a string of vile comments about Evans, a political correspondent for Joe, including: ‘Who would want to shag that?’

While despairing over the treatment of women in the media and more broadly in society, Moya said she was ‘exhausted’ having to constantly explain sexism before she was interrupted by Connor, who remarked: ‘I’m sorry you’re so exhausted to be paid to go on air.’

Moya replied she had not been given a fee for the Sky News appearance and had agreed to participate in the panel to raise awareness about deeply entrenched misogyny and the ‘degradation of women in public life.’

It then dawned on Moya that Connor was being paid for a debate during which he argued the pay gap was a myth: ‘I’m not getting paid for this. Are you getting paid for this?’

Pointing out the hypocrisy later on X, formerly known as Twitter, Moya wrote: ‘Sorry I’ve just clocked – the man who was arguing society isn’t structurally unequal for women was getting paid to appear in a ‘debate’ about misogyny and I wasn’t…’

Moya later wrote she had confirmed Connor had been offered a fee to appear on Sky News and had demanded the same amount, which she would be donating to Beyond Equality, an organisation that runs programmes educating young men on rejecting patriarchal culture in favour of positive masculinity.

It comes after Evans, who said she was left feeling ‘really hurt’ by Fox’s tirade and that he made comments about her body rather than her work, revealed she had received threats online.

‘Just before we came in here, there was a tweet that said “watch your back”.
