Home and Away star Lynne McGranger – best known for her loveable character Irene Roberts – suffered a nasty fall on Tuesday evening that left her with a bloodied and bruised face.

The star, who has been on the Australian show since 1993, shocked fans with a picture of her injuries that included sore red scrapes across her cheek, nose and chin and deep cuts on both her upper and lower lip.

Lynne, 70, explained that it all happened quite suddenly as one minute she was just fine.

"One minute walking your daughter and son-in-law's dog with your MOG (mother of the groom) Nek minit you’ve face planted the road," the soap star wrote.

The beloved Home and Away actress' post was quickly flooded with comments of support from worried fans.

One wrote, "Oh my goodness Lynne how shocking! I bet it gave you a shock. I hope you heal quickly."

"Oh no! I thought it was makeup. Look after yourself, Lynne," added another.

Others tried to make some light of the situation and commented, "Ouch, now how to write that into the script."

And Lynne also received best wishes from her co-stars, including Ethan Browne – who plays Tane on Home and Away – who said, "Damn, that looks pretty bad*ss! Hope you're all good though Lynne."

Lynne shared another image to Instagram just before the accident, where she is seen smiling with her son-in-law's mother with a black dog in her lap.

Annette, her son-in-law's mother, was quick to comment and make sure fans didn't think she was responsible for the accident.

"And I promise I didn’t trip or push her. Poor love, it wasn’t a good sight," she wrote.

Lynne has been a fan-favourite for quite some time now as she's played the iconic Irene on Home and Away since 1993, after taking over the role from actress Jacquy Phillips.

It's thought that Irene was originally written as a recurring character but was soon promoted to a regular cast member shortly after Lynne joined. She is one of the longest-serving stars on the hit Australian soap.

Two years ago, the star gave some insight into her personal life though and published a memoir Acting Up: Me, Myself And Irene, where she shared her struggles with drugs and an eating disorder.
