Stopping by Deadline’s TIFF studio to chat about his new Netflix co-created limited series, All the Light We Cannot See, <\/em>filmmaker Shawn Levy gave us a progress report on Deadpool 3. <\/em><\/p>\n

“Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least large swath of it, we’re paused. We’re halfway through filming Deadpool, <\/em>co-starring Wolverine. It was a joy every day and that chemistry is as relentless as we all hoped it would be.”<\/p>\n

The threequel to the 20th Century Studios\/Marvel Studios movie is currently scheduled to open in theaters on May 3. <\/p>\n

“Our crew and the rest of us are awaiting a fair and equitable deal that ends these strikes and puts this industry, inclusive of our movie, back at work,” Levy continued. <\/p>\n

The previous two Deadpool<\/em>s were release under 20th Century Fox, and the third film here is the first hatched under the Kevin Feige-run Disney owned Marvel, post-merger. Combined, but Deadpool <\/em>movies grossed $1.56 billion and paved the way for R-rated Marvel movies for mass, not limited, audience. Levy is taking over the directing reigns here from the pic’s first director Tim Miller, and second director, David Leitch. <\/p>\n

“I wasn’t going to mess with the DNA of that franchise,” Levy tells Deadline. <\/p>\n

Teasing what he can, he said, “Our movie is raw, audacious, very much R-rated and we went to great lengths to not shoot it on sound stages with digital environments.”<\/p>\n

“We wanted something that felt, grounded, real…You put Hugh Jackman in his most iconic character alongside Ryan Reynolds in his most iconic character; it’s more of a descendant of Midnight Run, <\/em>and 48 Hours, <\/em>and Planes, Trains and Automobiles <\/em>more than it’s a descendant of Airplane.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Levy is getting the Norman Jewison Career Award tonight at the TIFF Tribute Awards. <\/p>\n
