One Piece’s VFX Supervisor Victor Scalise and VFX Producer Scott Ramsey revealed Iñaki Godoy did plenty of his own stunts to bring Monkey D Luffy to life.

The rising Mexican star was best known for last year’s The Imperfects before landing the leading role in one of Netflix’s most ambitious undertakings yet.

Based on the classic manga by Eiichiro Oda, the series follows aspiring pirate Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates on their adventures to find the mythical “One Piece” treasure.

After accidentally eating a magical Gum Gum Fruit as a child, Luffy has developed extraordinary stretching abilities that come in handy during his fights with rival pirates.

“One of the greatest advantages we had on this show was Iñaki,” Scalise confirmed.

He has that excitement Luffy has, like, I’m going to give it 1000 percent, everything I do.

“Iñaki has that same attitude, just as a person.”

Although Scalise gave One Piece’s stunt team plenty of credit, they were lucky enough to find a leading man willing to throw himself headfirst into the action.

Luffy’s rubbery fighting style was, of course, enhanced by CGI, but Godoy provided the basis for much of the show’s thrilling action set pieces.

Don’t miss…

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

“He did a lot of his own stunts,” Scalise continued. “When it came to the punches, his body performance was so good.

“A lot of the time we were just taping over his shoulder to the arm, or the hip down for the leg. So we weren’t always painting him out of the scene.

“There’s a couple of ones we did all CG, but a lot of it is him in there. And it was due to his performances being so good.”

Near the start of the series, Luffy and his friends Roronoa Zoro (played by Mackenyu) and Nami (Emily Rudd) take down the likes of Axe-Hand Morgan (Langley Kirkwood) and Buggy the Clown (Jeff Ward).

Luffy overcomes the odds thanks to his stretchy powers and quick-thinking skills – but there are plenty more battles to come that will put his abilities to the test.

“He threw 100 percent into it,” Scalise added. “And you always get that big smile on his face.

“His character as an actor helped the visual effects flow because he was performing so well that the effects just blend right into his performance.”

One Piece is available to stream on Netflix.
