Will Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow Receive a Film Trilogy: Her Fellow Avengers Did?

As fans analyze set photos and read through various theoretical propositions concerning the upcoming Black Widow movie, information remains scarce. With San Diego Comic-Con just around the bend, Marvel fans hope Kevin Feige reveals information concerning Scarlett Johansson’s standalone film.

Given the fallout of events in Avengers: Endgame, the movie will undoubtedly be a prequel. Inverse suggests that Scarlett Johansson’s hair – in recently released set photos – may hold the answer to the film’s timeline. According to Inverse, her hair color and style – quite lengthy and blazing red – points to sometime around Iron Man 2, Winter Soldier, or Civil War.

When the Black Widow movie will take place is one of Marvel enthusiasts’ primary concerns, as such information is integral to the MCU timeline and its various narrative intricacies. However, one other significant question is looming over the production: will the upcoming prequel be the only Black widow-centric film?

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow deserves a trilogy too

The MCU is known for defying expectations and can seamlessly jump back and forth in time, or continuously dive further into the past with each successive Black Widow installment. However, if Black Widow precedes Endgame, and is designed to “catch up to Endgame, when must the movie start to guarantee that Black Widow receive the same treatment as her fellow Avengers?

Maybe the bigger question here is, not when does the Black Widow movie have to take place, but does Marvel Studios plan to make more than one Black Widow standalone film?

Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor have all been awarded the trilogy treatment. Not to mention, Chris Hemsworth will reprise Thor for a fourth installment! Tom Holland has already starred in two Spider-Man movies, and a second Captain Marvel movie was recently confirmed. So, with all the major Avengers receiving multiple movies, what will be Black Widow’s story (literally and metaphorically)?

Black Widow has been with the Avengers since Iron Man 2; however, newbies enter the mix – Holland, Larson, etc. – and receive their own movies instantly. Johansson’s Black Widow has been given the short end of the stick since the start. Despite fans’ persistence, Marvel Studios seemed to endlessly backburner the production. Will Marvel Studios let us down again with only one film?

A prequel already feels like a sorry excuse for a Black Widow-focused film: a lazy afterthought for Scarlett Johansson’s integral character

*’Avengers: Endgame’ spoilers ahead*

As soon a Black Widow died in Avengers: Endgame, fans – in theaters spanning the nation – issued a simultaneous expression of shock and grief. After the surprise of the initial moment passed, one thought ensued: what about the Black Widow movie?

Black Widow’s death in Avengers: Endgame opened the door for a prequel, which to many fans feels lesser than a film designed to follow a previous installment. When watching a prequel, you always get to say, “well, we know she will be fine,” drastically reducing the movie’s captivating nature and any attempts at maintaining suspense.

First, the Black Widow movie became a prequel. Now, we may only get one. While nothing has been confirmed, given Marvel Studios’ treatment of the heroine in the past – often relegating her to second fiddle – we shouldn’t be surprised if the kick*ass Avenger only receives one standalone film.
