When They See Us: Will When They See Us have a season 2?

When They See Us was created by Ava DuVernay to tell the stories of five men falsely convicted of rape and assault in 1990. The mini-series was released on Netflix on May 31 in four parts but fans of the crime drama series are desperate to know whether there will be any more of the show available. Here’s everything we know about a second series of the show.

Will When They See Us have a season 2?

When They See Us is Ava DuVernay’s Netflix mini-series telling the story of the Central Park jogger case.

In 1989, a 28-year-old woman was attacked and raped in Central Park.

The crime happened on the same night as reports of young black men attacking passers-by in the park.

As a result, five boys aged between 14 and 16-years-old, called Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, and Korey Wise, were questioned about the crimes.

After lengthy interrogations, each of the boys gave false confessions to the crimes in written and video statements.

These five boys were later wrongly convicted of the rape and assault of the woman in 1990.

They were not exonerated until 2002 when a convicted rapist and murderer called Matias Reyes confessed to the crime.

WHY DID THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE GIVE FALSE CONFESSIONS?

When They See Us dramatised this case in a mini-series looking at the individual stories of the men.

The show has been watched by more than 23 million Netflix accounts worldwide according to DuVernay on Twitter.

Given this massive critical success, some have been wondering if there will be another series of When They See Us.

The most obvious answer to this is no as the mini-series follows an isolated criminal case so it is very unlikely that it will be back for a second series.

The show follows the five men from when they are accused across 25 years until they were exonerated in 2002.

WHERE WAS WHEN THEY SEE US FILMED?

At the end of the mini-series, DuVernay also gives us a glimpse at life today for the five men.

Thanks to this extensive time-span, it is unlikely Ava DuVernay will pick up the story again for another season.

Creator DuVernay has also spoken about how she is glad to have told this story so that it does not have to be told again.

DuVernay was speaking with Oprah Winfrey and the five exonerated men in a Netflix special on the show.

WHAT DO THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE THINK OF THE NETFLIX SHOW?

She said to them: “You all gave me the honour of communicating with me in your own way and letting me listen to you and letting me tell the story.

“My hope for you is that you don’t have to keep telling the story, it’s been told and you can live your life knowing that you won. You won and we believe you and we see you.”

The show is also listed as a limited series by Netflix, which indicates it was only ever meant to have one outing.

Fans of When They See Us will be able to watch some other projects from Ava DuVernay who is currently working on a new television show.

Called Cherish the Day, the show is an anthology series that will appear on the Oprah Winfrey Network when it is released.

When They See Us is currently available to stream on Netflix.
