Last weekend, Jamie Laing and Karen Hauer delivered an intense Tango to Tanguera on Strictly Come Dancing. They were awarded 24 points for their performance and the judges gave them a few improvement pointers. When It Takes Two host Zoe Ball brought up Shirley Ballas’ comments in particular, Karen explained her thoughts and disagreed with the head judges’ opinion.

“Comments from the judges, just incredible,” Zoe said. “Shirley wants you to work a bit on your musicality.

“He [Jamie] went out and did that dance, he learnt those steps in three days, he’s bringing that performance, musicality as well?”

“Funny enough? I thought his musicality was right on point,” Karen said.

“Maybe she wanted him to elongate a little bit more. Because if he wasn’t in on his music then I wasn’t in on my music.”

“Oh, we heard it here first!” Jamie remarked.

“So is she giving me a note here?” Karen asked and Zoe reiterated: “Who’s getting the note here?”

Shirley awarded Jamie an eight for his Tango efforts and despite being middle of the leaderboard, he faced Clara Amfo in the dance-off.

“Unfortunately you went in the dance off, your little face. The two couple’s there, that was so, so tough,” the host continued.

“You’ve been there before, any easier second time round?”

“It’s maybe a little bit easier because you understand what we have to do,” Jamie commented.

“But again, Karen, I was pacing up and down and she looked at me and said ‘we’ve got this, we’re going to blow it out the water’.

“And we did it. The fact we’re in the quarter-finals!”

“Musical Week people!” Zoe exclaimed. “You guys have a wonderful theme. A Jive, to the music from Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

“For anyone who hasn’t seen it, it’s a wonderful musical about a 16-year-old schoolboy who won’t conform to the norms.

“How are you going to get into character Jamie?”

“When Karen told me this, I said ‘they’re going to think I’m the most self-indulgent person ever!’” He laughed.

“I didn’t write this song about myself, it’s an amazing show. Hopefully we can do it justice.”

“How’s it [training] gone so far?” Zoe asked Karen and she replied: “It’s good.

“It’s getting him to relax into those [flicks and kicks]. Retraction, retraction, retraction.

“Don’t worry, I’ll get you Jiving,” she told Jamie.

As for Jamie’s chance of lifting the Glitterball Trophy in a few weeks, he is going to have to impress those watching at home.

According to bookmaker Betfair, Jamie is 14/1 to win the 2020 show.

Bill Bailey is still the firm favourite, and remains popular with punters with odds of 8/11.

As for who will be leaving the nation’s favourite dance competition, Jamie has been tipped to go head to head with JJ Chalmers in the dance-off.

Strictly Come Dancing airs tomorrow night on BBC One and It Takes Two airs weekday evenings at 6.30pm on BBC Two.
