Coronation Street actor Stephanie Beacham lauded the humility of her fellow Weatherfield star William Roache. The TV legend who portrayed Martha Fraser in the ITV soap was excited to work with him again. She gave the Loose Women panel an insight into what the Corrie legend is like behind the scenes.

Stephanie last appeared on the cobbles in 2009 and the actress revealed how she jumped at the chance to come back.

She explained: “I said ‘Oh yes please’ because I wanted to work with Bill Roache again. He is a dear friend and such a lovely man and he is so modest.

“There’s the new ITV studios in Salford and it is so impressive and extraordinary and Bill has been with the programme for 60 years.

“I was going to his dressing room because I was going to be running some lines and I said ‘Bill you don’t have a bathroom’ he said ‘No I don’t need it’.”

Stephanie then admitted: “I thought if I had been in a programme for 60 years I would have a suite in there!”

The live audience and panellists Kaye Adams, Kelly Holmes, Judi Love and Jane Moore all chuckled at the diva-like demands.

She spent her time entertaining the crowd in a shortened edition of the show, due to the Government budget talks interfering with the show.

Presenter Kaye remarked: “Unfortunately our time is so short today but you’re going to have to blame Jeremy Hunt.”

Stephanie quipped: “I will blame Jeremy Hunt quite a lot, I think, but I think I want Liz Truss in jail first.”

The rest of the panel held in their laughter while Judi Love looked away sheepishly.

Stephanie made her name in the classic American soap opera Dynasty in the 1980s and also starred in the prison drama Bad Girls in the noughties

Ahead of her return to Weatherfield, the veteran actress expressed her delight in coming back to reprise her mischievous role.

She exclaimed in a statement on her return: “I am delighted that Martha has returned to Weatherfield. It is an absolute joy to be working with Bill again.”

Her colleague William shares her joy too, but also explained a conflict of interests for his character Ken Barlow.

He explained: “I was delighted when Wendy came back into Ken’s life.

“I love that the writers are drawing on the rich history of Ken’s life to come up with these stories.

William added: “When I found out that Martha was also going to make a return I was thrilled.

“But I fear heartache may be around the corner once more for Ken now he has found himself in another love triangle.”

In the soap, Ken has picked things back up with old flame Wendy Popadopulous (played by Roberta Kerr).

However, after thirteen years since his affair with Martha, it looks as though trouble is on the horizon.
