Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) is only ever a step away from losing control and is capable of anything in Coronation Street, especially now that he has lost all of his allies and his family.
So when he is pushed to the edge by Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) over Sally and Tim (Sally Dynevor and Joe Duttine), Geoff explodes with violence and grabs a spade to attack his son and his wife.
But how far is the monstrous local set to go – will he lose control to the extent where someone is seriously hurt, or worse?
Geoff is still seething that he has been frozen out of the family so when he sees them enjoying a party in the back garden without him, he spitefully heads into the back garden and starts playing music loudly.
As he makes digs, Tim eventually loses it and throws a bucket of ice cold water over his stirring dad. Debbie watches with interest and then slips next door to whisper in Geoff’s ear that Sally has done nothing but badmouth him.
This sets Geoff on edge and he loses control, grabbing a spade and wielding it widely in front of the shocked guests of the party.
Sally watches on and later tells Sally that she doesn’t know how she can possibly live with someone as brutish as Geoff next door – she should sell up.
And before long, Sally has an offer for the full asking price. In this economy? How fortuitous! Or is everything as it seems? Well, of course not – this has a certain Mr Ray Crosby (Mark Frost) written all over it…
