Sunday’s episode of hugely popular BBC police drama Line of Duty saw the net seemingly close in on Marcus (played by James Nesbitt), whose name just kept cropping up. But the ending led AC-12 to believe Marcus had been found dead in Spain, causing another blow to their investigation into historic police corruption as well as the murder of journalist Gail Vella (Andi Osho). But it’s possible that Marcus isn’t dead, and could in fact be operating as H.
While watching police in Spain storm Marcus’ home through live footage, it was revealed two bodies were found.
The team is led to believe this is Marcus and his wife, and Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) is seen to finally break down over the pressure of the increasingly impossible case.
Information given to DI Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) in a previous episode confirmed that Gail Vella had been looking into the death of Lawrence Christopher in police custody – a case headed at the time by Thurwell.
The cover-up of the murder and police actions happened under Thurwell, so the timing of Gail’s death, while she had been looking into the case, puts him in the spotlight.
Thurwell also has links to Darren Hunter, the son of former OCG (Organised Crime Group) leader Tommy Hunter (Brian McCardie).
The OCG also murdered Oliver Stephens-Lloyd before he could give evidence regarding sexual abuse at Sands View Boys’ Home, and Ted believed Thurwell is connected to the killing and the abuse cover-up.
Ted became exasperated after hearing of Thurwell’s “death”, as all evidence and people of interest in the historic crimes are disappearing.
But could his death have been faked as part of a huge cover-up?
Although police footage showed two bodies in the home, no real details could be seen in the grainy footage.
Furthermore, there was no official confirmation that the body was that of Thurwell.
Police at the address mentioned his name, but it’s very possible that he’s actually alive, and knew AC-12 were onto him.
He definitely fits the profile for H, with his historic connections to suspicious people and cases.

Patricia Carmichael identified as H as Line of Duty fans solve clue?
This means he would have the power and means of staging his death in order to go on the run and be off AC-12’s radar.
He very easily could have been tipped off that anti-corruption was onto him, and would immediately want to make it look like he’s no longer around.
Also, Marcus has only ever been seen in photos, and with a big name like James Nesbitt portraying him, it seems likely he will make a more significant appearance.
And it seems plenty of Line of Duty fans are also convinced Thurwell is very well and truly alive.
“There’s no way they’ve cast James Nesbitt to play a dead bloke. That’s not his body. #LineofDuty,” said one fan on Twitter, while a second agreed: “Thurlwell is NOT dead for sure #LineofDuty.”
A third weighed in: ” Still doubting Thurwell is dead need proper ID #LineofDuty.“
“No chance is Marcus Thurwell dead. Otherwise #JamesNesbit wouldn’t have been cast in the role… #LineofDuty,” added a fourth.
And a fifth concurred: ” AS IF Thurwell is dead, I need proof right now! #LineofDuty #LOD.”
Fans know that the person spearheading the OCG, known only as “H”, communicates via an encrypted messaging service.
In a recent episode, Steve and Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) were informed that the messages could be coming from a location in Spain.
Although this is only a possibility because the location could have been altered deliberately, it still seems like a big detail given what viewers know about Thurwell.
Will the last episode next week see Thurwell “back from the dead” and revealed as H in what is bound to be one of the most revealing and dramatic episodes in the series?
For now, fans will have to wait.
Line of Duty concludes on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
