Outlander is the long-running Starz drama series all about time travel and colonial adventures. Fans can’t get enough of the series, with Starz rolling ahead with the release of season six in early 2022. But is the series based on an original book series?
Is Outlander based on a book?
Yes, in fact, the show is based on a series of novels by the author Diana Gabaldon.
There are eight books in the original series originally began in 1991 with the release of the first novel which gives the show its name.
In fact, the original novel series is still ongoing after 30 years, with the release of book nine, Go Tell The Bees I Am Gone, dropping November 23, 2021.
There is even a day dedicated to the release of the original novel, June 1, which is now known as World Outlander Day for fans of the franchise.
Each season of the show adapts one of these novels, meaning there is still plenty of material for the showrunners to work with.
Speaking to Parade, Gabaldon spoke about her thoughts on the series, revealing that she thinks the showrunners have “done a very good job.”
She explained: “They’ve done a very good job of making it a faithful adaptation while still fitting it into the structure they need for TV.”
The show has been largely faithful to the story of the original books, with little deviation from the story.
However, some original novel fans think some of the changes to the characters leave a lot to be desired, however, Gabaldon has her opinion on the matter.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she added: “Actors act. They embody the character. It doesn’t actually matter what they look like beyond certain rough physical parameters.
“Caitriona [Balfe] does a beautiful job with Claire. She is different than the book, and that’s because most of what you find funny about Claire is the things she’s thinking.
“You can’t do that on a show without constant voiceover.”
Series producer Starz is just as feen to keep the series going, with the announcement that the show will be receiving a seventh season following season six.
Season six will have a shorter episode length of just eight episodes, but season seven will make up the difference with 16 episodes.
Fans have had to wait a long time for season six following a number of delays caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
Season six recently wrapped filming in Scotland, the location of which leads to a much faster production schedule compared to previous seasons.
Fans have been sharing their excitement ahead of the launch of Outlander season six, with many of them taking to Twitter to discuss the show.
One fan said: “Cannot wait for the Outlander Adventure Season 6 to begin especially the premiere episode – 90 whole minutes!!!!!!”
Another fan added: “Congrats and THANK YOU to cast & crew for making it through with all the challenges of this past year! Can’t wait!”
A third fan commented: “Congratulations to all on putting together what we know will be another incredible season of Outlander!!!”
