Hollyoaks stars forgotten role in Channel 4 soap before becoming Sylver McQueen

Hollyoaks star David Tag touched upon the role he played before landing the part of Sylver McQueen.

The actor, 38, was introduced as the brother of Goldie McQueen (Chelsee Healey) in 2018 and he remained on the soap for four years before he was tragically killed off. But his debut as Sylver wasn't the first time he'd visited the set.

In 2016, David starred as PCSO Rocco for a single episode. His role came during the Gloved Hand killer storyline when Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) was given police protection at her home while Lindsey Roscoe (Sophie Austin) was on the loose.

Lindsey's sister Kim Butterfield (Daisy Wood-Davis) pointed out that PCSO Rocco spent more time "eyeing up Mercedes" than offering police help – something David agreed with. In an exclusive chat with Daily Star, the dad-of-two recalled: "I played a police constable and my role was basically checking out Mercedes McQueen, giving her the eye and then that was me done."

The part became a funny coincidence given that David's subsequent character ended up marrying Mercedes in 2019. The former soap star recalled the moment he landed the role of Sylver.

David continued: "Then about a year later I auditioned for this regular part, hoping people wouldn’t notice that I was already in it, but it happens quite a lot. He added: "When I got the phone call it was kind of like how I imagine you’d feel if you won the lottery because I was apparently up against 400 other lads, so the chances are slim.

"I then got whittled down to three men and then I was the final choice." David went on: "These roles are so few and far between so when I got the call, I couldn’t believe it really.

"To be part of the McQueen family who are such an iconic part of the show, it was just amazing. The actor revealed the first person he called to tell was his mum.

In December, David will transform into the baddie Fleshcreep for Jack and the Beanstalk in Middleton's Arena. The star is no stranger to pantomime, having performed as the Ringmaster in Goldilocks and the Three Bears in both 2021 and 2022.

Speaking about the upcoming show, David admitted he is ready to tackle the role as it's something he hasn't done before. He said: "We’ve not actually started rehearsals yet but I’ve been given the song sheets. I’m excited to get my teeth into it because I’ve not really done anything like this before."
