GMB’s Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley clash over Will Smith punching Chris Rock

Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley got into a heated discussion over Will Smith hitting comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars 2022.

The hosts began the ITV morning news programme on Monday 28 March with a reference to the biggest awards show of the season which saw Hollywood actor Will, 53, lose his cool.

Chris had made a joke about Will's wife Jada Pinkett Smith, when he teased he was looking forward to watching her in G.I. Jane.

The former SNL presenter was referencing the 50 year old's recent decision to shave her head, as she suffers from the hair loss condition alopecia.

Furious with Chris, Will stormed onto the stage, hit the host, and then yelled from back in his seat: "Keep my wife's name out of your f*****g mouth."

Reflecting and watching the scene at the same time, Susanna began: "Obviously you can see he was furious about what was said, and I'm not defending the joke, but really? Now? We're in 2022? It's ok to get up on stage and hit somebody?"

Passionate about the situation, Richard all but cut off his co-presenter as he declared: "I'm not defending it either. It's clearly not ok but it happened, and once it's happened you have to analyse the motives that lay behind it.

As Susanna turned subdued, Richard continued: "And what I'm trying to suggest is that maybe, although you can say it was wrong, and he could be charged with an offence presumably, was it something you would say was understandable under the heat of the moment?"

"I understand that he did it. I just don't think it's ok that he did it, and I love Will Smith," Susanna shot back.

"He's an absolutely lovely guy whenever I've interviewed him, he's been utterly charming and lovely, but…"

Suddenly remembering his own history with Chris, Richard butted in: "Well I've got skin in that game, because I've interviewed Chris Rock.

"I was asked some years ago by GQ magazine, who was the most unpleasant person I'd ever interviewed in my entire career, and that goes back to 1972, when I was working for local newspapers.

"And I said without hesitation, it's on the record, Chris Rock. Judi [Finnigan] and I interviewed him for a Channel 4 programme, with Ben Stiller. They did the voices on Madagascar. And without going into detail, it was a pre-recorded interview, had it been live we would have abandoned it….

"He was the most unpleasant, rude, aggressive, unlikable human being I have ever interviewed on camera," Richard claimed. "Without question. We edited round all the difficult bits and the interview that went out looked alright, but actually his behaviour was awful.

"And in my opinion he was the most unpleasant celebrity I've ever had the misfortune to meet, but I wouldn't have punched him," the star added.

While both Richard and Susanna having opinions about the major Hollywood stars, industry players have been reacting to the shocking incident.

The Academy also stated: "The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world."

After cooling down off-camera and a chat with Denzel Washington and Bradley Cooper, Will later apologised for his actions after winning the prestigious award for Best Actor, which he received for his work in King Richard.

"Art imitates life," Will said. "I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things."
