Former EastEnders cast set to return to Albert Square for Dot Cottons funeral

Popular BBC One soap EastEnders is set to pay tribute to one of its most iconic cast members, June Brown OBE, in a one-off special episode for the funeral of Dot Cotton.

Dot, who became Dot Branning after marrying Jim on Valentines Day 2002, will pass away off screen in upcoming scenes, with Albert Square gathering to say a final goodbye to the soap legend.

The character was one of the soaps most well-loved stars, with memorable storylines including a monologue which saw Dot reminisce on years of loss and grief into a tape recorder as a message to her ailing husband Jim.

June had played the iconic character since 1985 – making her the show's longest-serving cast member.

The BBC confirmed in August 2022, three months after June's death, that EastEnders would pay tribute to the actress in a one-off episode where familiar faces would return to the Square to wave goodbye to Dot.

But which cast members will return to EastEnders and when will the episode air? Here's everything you need to know:

Which cast members will return to EastEnders for Dot Cotton's funeral?

EastEnders has announced that six cast members will return to Albert Square to wave goodbye to Dot.

Jacqueline Jossa, who played Lauren Branning on the show, will return to Walford to say her final farewell to her beloved step-grandmother.

It has been teased that Lauren will be keen to get to know a handsome resident whilst she spends time back in Albert Square, with the love interest yet to be revealed by producers.

Confirming her return, Jacqueline said: "Coming back to EastEnders for Dot's funeral was a no-brainer, and it was a real honour to be invited back. I had a lot of fun but, of course, it was bittersweet. It was amazing to be back, but hard to be filming this storyline.

"I can tell the viewers now that Dot gets the beautiful send-off that she deserves. June was the light and joy of EastEnders. I had so much fun working with her, the incredible stories and how infectious & witty she was. June is a legend and I miss her very much."

Others who are joining Lauren back on the Square include:

  • Colin Russell, played by Lord Michael Cashman CBE
  • Barry Clark, played by Gary Hailes
  • George ‘Lofty’ Holloway, played by Tom Watt
  • Mary ‘the punk’ Smith, played by Linda Davidson
  • Disa O’Brien, played by Jan Graveson

When will Dot Cotton's funeral air?

An official date for Dot Cotton's funeral is yet to be announced by EastEnders producers.

However, the BBC said in August that the residents of Albert Square will gather for a funeral in a "special episode airing this winter".

EastEnders airs on Mondays – Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
