In the first ever episode of hit Channel 4 show Escape to the Chateau, Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree began their search to find their dream home. It took the couple four years and numerous trips to France, but they eventually fell in love with Chateau de la Motte Husson. But, when Angel stepped over the threshold after buying the chateau, she was overcome with emotion.
Escape to the Chateau’s Dick and Angel managed to purchase their dream home for £250,000.
The Chateau boasted 45 rooms set over five floors and came with 20 acres of land, a walled garden and an orangery.
However, just after buying the property it all got a bit too much for Angel.
She broke down in tears as soon as she entered the Chateau they had just bought.
As the couple walked through the front door, Dick said: “Wow! There you go darling. We are in.”
“Look how beautiful that is. Everything is gorgeous,” he remarked.
An emotional Angel agreed, saying: “Everything is so beautiful.”
Angel was seen wiping away tears as she came to the realisation they finally had their dream home, and said: “Right let’s get to work.”
However, the more the couple wandered around their newly purchased property, they began noticing just how much work it really need.
Dick even pointed out signs there had previously been an electrical fire in the building.
In fact, when the couple bought the Chateau it had no working plumbing or electricity.
The program explained that many buyers are put off from Chateaus as they can cost more to renovate than to buy.
Dick flicked though a folder of documents, highlighting all the the problems with the building.
He began joking: “200 plus pages of reasons not to buy a house.”
“Look at the sewage. Look at the electrics in here. Look at the lead paint – asbestos. It basically says don’t buy me,” he concluded.
However, as an engineer, Dick was convinced he was able to take on a project of this size.
Also in the episode, Angel explained she was much more focused on the interior design, whereas Dick was constantly thinking about the practical side of things.
She explained: “When I walk into a room I know that Dick’s thinking ‘okay well the radiators are gonna go there and the plumbing will go there.’”
“And I’m thinking ‘oh there’s going to be a giraffe there’,” Angel said.
Dick and Angel originally set themselves a budget of £20,000 to spend on the renovations, however the plumbing and heating alone set them back £18,000.
Escape to the Chateau is available to watch on All 4.
