Amy Dowden revealed she was rushed to hospital earlier this month after she contracted sepsis following her first round of chemotherapy.

Last month, the Strictly Come Dancing star told fans how doctors had discovered she had “another type of cancer” after her initial breast cancer diagnosis earlier this spring.

She began chemo on August 3 and has been updating her adoring fans on the health battle on her Instagram Stories online.

The pro dancer admitted she was “wishing this wasn’t happening to me” after she had a port fitted and started her cold cap treatment which aims to reduce hair loss.

But most recently, Amy started to feel sick and recorded a temperature of 37.7 degrees which she explained “ could be fatal for a chemo patient.”

At first, the dancer assumed that she was just reacting to the chemo but things took a turn when she struggled to feel better, with her mum Gillian saying she went from OK to ill “in an instant.”

She quickly became breathless and complained of a pain in her chest before she “crumpled back onto the settee.”

Speaking to Hello! Magazine, Amy recalled: “I began feeling sick and not quite right. I felt freezing cold but I was all clammy and shaking.

“My mum and dad rang my red card [which provides the chemotherapy team’s contact details and current treatment information] and they said to hang up and ring the ambulance.”

After the paramedics turned up, they advised her to rush to hospital, but the dancer was reluctant to go.

She went on: “I didn’t want to go into hospital; at the time I didn’t realise how ill I was. I knew it was a Saturday night, so A&E would probably be crowded, and it was dangerous being around people as it’s more likely you’ll pick up an infection. On chemo, you don’t have your white blood cells to fight infection.”

Luckily, Amy began responding to treatment and began to improve and returned home a few days later.

Reflecting on the scary ordeal, she added: “I just got very, very unlucky. I’m also more prone to infections because my Chron’s means I have a lower immune system.”

She went on to share her gratitude to the paramedics that saved her life and her Strictly co-stars who have been in touch every step of the way.
