Rita Simons has revealed that she has had a hysterectomy.

The former EastEnder, 45, had the op after suffering from “debilitating” periods, which she said affected her ability to work and had an impact on her Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and anxiety.

Speaking exclusively to OK! magazine, she said that “health comes first” but that the procedure had taken away her chance to have more children.

Rita, who is mum to 16-year-old twins Jaimee and Maiya, said: “As a woman, we often take for granted that you can get pregnant and then when you are not able to and the choice is taken away…”

The star split from her former husband Theo Silverston in 2018 and found love with her partner Ben Harlow before lockdown in 2020.

She said until then she hadn’t really thought of having more children.

“Ben knows… he’s not stupid and he knows it upsets me that, as a woman, I’m not able to become pregnant any more and I think, being so sweet, he wouldn’t have dared say, ‘But I want kids!’” she said.

Rita, who is now facing the menopause after having the surgery, said she felt as if it had been “an attack” on her femininity.

But the star – best known for playing Roxy Mitchell in the BBC soap – said she knew it was the right thing for her to do.

She told OK! that her own good mental health was good for her children, and good for Ben too.

“They have felt my wrath when I’m premenstrual and they don’t deserve it,” said the star.
