Why 'Zelda' Fans Think 'Breath of the Wild 2' Will Finally Premiere at The Game Awards 2021

The Game Awards has long been more than just an awards show. In addition to giving accolades to the year’s best video games in more than 30 categories, the event serves as a hub for announcements and updates. Host Geoff Keighley previously teased in an Epic Games interview that 2021’s awards show will feature an unprecedented number of announcements and premiere videos. Now, another hint from Keighley has fans thinking one of those premieres at The Game Awards 2021 will be The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.

‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2’ was announced 2.5 years ago

Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a stunning open-world adventure with Link through the kingdom of Hyrule, became an instant classic with its release on Nintendo Switch in 2017. So, when Nintendo announced a sequel in 2019, fans couldn’t wait to hear more news about the release.

Tentatively titled Breath of the Wild 2, the game will follow Link and Zelda on another quest in Hyrule. Nintendo offered a first look at Breath of the Wild 2 via a short cinematic trailer at E3 2019. As seen below, the eerie video showed what looked to be a tomb beneath Hyrule and a dangerous warrior coming to life.

The studio stayed quiet about the sequel until E3 2021 when another teaser trailer offered a more detailed glimpse at the new and improved Hyrule. This time, fans received a release window: 2022.

Geoff Keighley says The Game Awards 2021 will have a ‘world premiere’ that’s been 2.5 years in the making

With 2022 right around the corner, many fans think it’s time for another big Breath of the Wild 2 reveal. And what better time is there to do so than the biggest night in gaming? Interestingly, a new comment from Keighley on Nov. 27 has many fans believing that Breath of the Wild 2 will have a world premiere at The Game Awards 2021.

“Just saw the final cut of a #thegameawards world premiere we have been working on with a developer for 2.5 years,” he wrote on Twitter. “Truly honored we are entrusted to share this work with the world.”

Naturally, fans are putting 2.5 and 2.5 together.

“I’m just gonna say it, BotW 2 was announced almost exactly 2.5 years ago,” one fan replied.

Some users pointed out that “world premiere” might not fit Breath of the Wild 2 since the game technically “premiered” in 2019. However, others countered with the fact that The Game Awards did the exact same thing with Breath of the Wild. Nintendo unveiled the game at E3 2014, but it still had a “world premiere” video at The Game Awards that same year.

If there were ever a perfect year for The Game Awards to host a Breath of the Wild 2 premiere, 2021 would be it. This year marks the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise. It seems only fitting that Nintendo would end the celebration with a full trailer for the franchise’s next installment.

The Game Awards 2021 will stream live on Dec. 9

Fans will have to wait until Dec. 9 to see if they were right about the world premiere. The Game Awards 2021 will stream live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. In the meantime, there’s still time for fans to vote for the award winners via The Game Awards website.
