DEAR DEIDRE: WHAT are the right words to use to get my wife to lose some weight?
She seems to be eating correctly but I think her heavy drinking every evening adds the calories. I am guessing she is at least five stone overweight.

I’m 31 and my wife is 29. We’ve been together for six years. She has gone up from a size ten to an 18 and I am finding it difficult to know how to handle this sensitive situation.
I am growing increasingly worried, especially with the Covid-19 risks. I don’t drink any more and hoped she would give up too. I’ve made hints before but without success.
DEIDRE SAYS: She is clearly unhappy. Sit down with her when she is sober and say you want to understand why she drinks like this.
Say how much you love her but tell her you are worried, as this level of drinking is dangerous.
Suggest you get into walking together, running or cycling. Start gently.
