Wetherspoons is cutting its prices by 7.5% – but only for one special day

Wetherspoons is set to cut the price of its food and drink next week – but you have to visit on a certain day to bag the boozy bargains.

The popular pub chain has said customers will be able to make the most of 7.5% off at its pubs on Thursday, September 15.

Even though the offer is a great one it will only last for the one day.

At the popular boozer, a large breakfast would usually set you back £6.30, but the discount means you'll only be spending £5.83.

This makes a total saving of 47p.

If you decided to take up the deal you could also save 55p on a classic burger and soft drink – as the price is being slashed from £7.45 to £6.90.

It's important to note that prices do vary in branches across the country, but a £3.50 pint would be able to be snapped up for the cheaper price of £3.24.

The decision has been made to slash the prices to highlight Tax Equality Day to show what the perks could be if the tax bill was properly reduced for the pub industry.

At the moment pubs and restaurants have to cough up 20% VAT, which was cut to 5% during the pandemic.

Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin has since encouraged the new Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng to once again cut the rate of VAT to help pubs stay on their feet.

He claims that, due to the fact that the rate is higher for pubs, it leads to putting supermarkets at an unfair advantage.

Meanwhile, grocers don't have to pay VAT on food.

According to The Sun, Mr Martin said: "Customers in our pubs will find the price of their food and drink will be lower than normal on Tax Equality Day.

“The Chancellor should note that the main impact of tax inequality is on high streets and town and city centres, which heavily depend on a diversity of prosperous hospitality businesses for economic, social and employment success."

Customers in Scotland won't be able to see the same discount benefits as a result of licensing regulations.

The same goes for branches at airports and the Republic of Ireland.

This summer the pub has been flogging drinks for as little as £1.99, and those who enjoy a tipple now and then will be able to make the most of this offer until September 30.

It's always a good idea to ask staff at your local branch which drinks are on offer as a part of the deal.

You can do this by looking at the chain's pub checker tool on its website.

Always check this before heading to the pub, as even though most Wetherspoon pubs will be offering the discount, it can cost slightly more at city pubs.

Up until the end of the month you can also bag two bottled lagers for £5 at the popular chain.

As part of the deal you could bag drinks such as Peroni, Estrella Galicia and Desperados.

Punters can also bag three for £5 on the following bevvies:

  • Camden Hells lager
  • Beck’s
  • Bud Light strawberry
  • Passion fruit Seltzers

If you don't always want to hit the booze, roughly 31 soft drinks will also be on offer under £1.99 and hot drinks will be marked up at this price or less too.

It will undoubtedly be good news for Spoons drinkers who reportedly saw 10p added to the cost of a pint in March, while they went up by 20p in London.

But it can't be ruled out that prices could jump again as Mr Martin has also said that the costs of labour, food and energy bills have also added “considerable pressure on costs”.
