GLITZ, glamour, and golf, all in the same location – that is what this week’s US Open at the ultra-posh Los Angeles Country Club promises.
The course is just 15 minutes away from Hollywood, and there should be plenty of A-listers lining the fairways to see if England’s Matt Fitzpatrick can retain the title he won at Brookline a year ago.
The event itself is also likely to be dominated by the best of the best, as the cream tends to rise to the top at the US US Open far more frequently than at the other three Majors.
When Fitzpatrick won last year as the world No 18 he was continuing a trend that has seen the vast majority of US Open champions come from inside the world’s top 20, since the rankings were introduced in 1986.
Lucas Glover was the last shock winner 14 years ago – when he was ranked 71st – and he was one of only three champions from outside the top fifty.
The rankings may not be quite such an accurate guide this year, as LIV stars such as Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau – both US Open winners in the past seven years – have plummeted down the list by not earning points in LIV events.
But the winner is still likely to come from the top tier of the game.
That narrows things down – but with the LA course making its Major championship debut, course form is going to be at a premium.

Who is the favourite for the US Open?
Scottie Scheffler is the man to beat at the top of the market again ahead of Masters winner Jon Rahm and PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka.
Last year's Masters champion has struggled on the greens of late but has been exceptional everywhere else, and the bookies think it could be his week.
That trio is closely followed by Rory McIlroy and then Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland and Xander Schaufelle.

US Open tips
One player who does know the course pretty well is world No 7 Max Homa, who also fits the bill as one of the best players in the game.
He shot a course record 61 at Los Angeles Country Club when he won the prestigious PAC-12 amateur event there by five shots in 2013.
It is hard to put too much faith in amateur form that is ten years old. But a certain Jon Rahm was another of the future stars playing that week, and he finished 14 shots behind Homa.
As a Califonioa native Homa is accustomed to local conditions, so at 28-1 he has to make the shortlist.
World No 2 Rahm is second favourite at 10-1 behind the man who heads the rankings, Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler is a model of consistency, but his putting has been erratic recently, and a best priced 7-1 looks too short. Give me Rahm any day, especially as it is hard to say what out-of-sorts world No 3 Rory McIlroy will offer, especially in the final round.
Brooks Koepka has led the LIV charge in the last two Majors, finishing runner-up to Rahm at the Masters, and then clinching an impressive victory at the USPGA.
Doubts about what the future will hold now that LIV and the PGA Tour have made peace will not worry Koepka one bit. He is far too single-minded for that.
I can see him enjoying the sort of year he had in 2019, when he finished 2-1-2-4 in the Majors. So at 11-1, he has to be in the betting plan too.
As previously stated, the US Open is a graveyard for outsiders. But with some bookmakers offering up to 12 places, it may be worth having a small interest on a few longer priced players.
Justin Rose, the 2013 US Open champion, will relish this test. He looked likely to mount a strong challenge for the Canadian Open title until finding water at the eight hole on Sunday.
He still finished solo eighth, and is worth another chance at around 40-1, while fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood will appeal to many at around the same price as Rose.
But Fleetwood’s play-off defeat in Canada came in a week when he led the putting stats. As a streaky putter, he is unlikely to top that category twice in a row.
Wyndham Clark has been one of the form players of 2023, and at 60-1 the Wells Fargo Championship winner is another player who should go well here.
And if you are looking for a real outsider, you could do worse than Eric Cole. He will still be buzzing after his final round flourish in Canada, a 63 that earned him a share of sixth – his second top six finish in the last two months.
