A university dropout has revealed how she is set to earn six figures after launching her own social media business.

Alexa Wilkinson, 21, of Aberford, Leeds, began studying music at Leeds Beckett University in 2019 after feeling ‘pressured by the school’ to go, but almost immediately decided it wasn’t for her.

After starting her second year, Alexa dropped out of university in February and launched her social media marketing business – Social By Alexa.

She was able to buy a house worth £350,000 with her 22-year-old boyfriend, Jack Walker, in June, saying: ‘Dropping out of university was the best decision I’ve ever made, and I’m set to earn six figures in 2022.’

Alexa started influencing on Instagram when she was 16 years old, which sparked her passion for the social media industry.

She said she felt ‘pressured’ to go to university because it was what ‘school told us to do’.

But after just a few months, Alexa realised she wanted to pursue a different path and began learning how to set up a business whilst still attending her lectures.

After working on her company whilst studying at university, Alexa began working for other businesses for free in a bid to gain experience.

She explained: ‘I wanted to learn more about marketing and put so much time into taking online courses and doing work for free to add to my portfolio.

‘When I was influencing, I was so much more interested in what went on behind the scenes and how social media works for companies.

‘Whilst I was learning, I wasn’t going on nights out or meeting up with friends, I was just so motivated and wanted to make this work.’

And as she finished her first year of university, she decided it wasn’t the right path for her.

After successfully launching her own business, Alexa bought herself a Mercedes and says she ‘can’t wait’ to expand her business ‘even more’

Alexa explained: ‘After going into my second year at university, I realised that being there made no sense to me because I had no plans to go into a career in music and always wanted to launch my own social media marketing company.

‘I felt like I had to go to uni because that’s what the school told us to do, and I decided to go purely for the student experience, but it wasn’t worth it for me.

‘I’m such a motivated and driven young woman and I felt like I was wasting time, so I started learning how to set up a business behind the scenes and began planning the business towards the end of last year.

‘From February, the business has just grown and grown and I’m now able to earn a decent wage and am in a much better financial position than most people my age.’

The 21-year-old, who described herself as ‘motivated’, confessed she ‘felt like she was wasting time’ at university studying music (pictured)

She explained:  ‘Typically, brands will approach me and say they want social media management and that can range from replying to their messages on Instagram to creating the content and strategy.

‘The maximum I charge a brand at the moment is £1,500 and the packages all vary depending on what they need doing.’

Alexa, who is originally from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, now lives with her boyfriend, Jack, a rugby player, in their four-bed, detached home in Leeds.

She added: ‘Putting the deposit down on that house was such a proud moment for me.

‘Whilst I was at uni, I struggled with finances and now, I own my own house, drive a Mercedes, and am living the life I always dreamed of living.

‘I never thought I’d be buying a house at 20, I only just turned 21 so I was 20 when we bought the house and that was something I didn’t think I would be able to achieve for years.’

Alexa is looking to expand the business in the new year and is hoping to hire some more people to increase the workload.

She said:  ‘I always knew I wanted to be successful, and I was constantly bullied at school, so this is a huge achievement for me.

‘Jack is so supportive and my parents are so proud of me.

‘I have a Mercedes, I can go on holiday, I have a house, I have a dog, and I can’t wait to expand the business even more.’
