Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Lidl issue shopping restriction rules – covid product limits update

Asda outline their latest safety measures during the pandemic

In many parts of the UK, visiting a supermarket is the only reason Britons are allowed to leave their homes as they are urged to stay at home as much as possible. What are the buying restrictions in Tesco, Asda, Lidl and Aldi?


Last month, the supermarket giant introduced limits on a number of selected items, which remain in place.

These included a three item limit on purchase such as flour, dried pasta, eggs, rice and antibacterial wipes.

The supermarket giant also has limits on what customers can order online.

The Tesco website states: “To make sure more people have access to everyday essentials, we’ve introduced a limit of 95 items per online order.

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

“We continue to encourage customers to buy only what they need, to help make sure there’s enough for everyone.”


Asda has not put nationwide limits on any items in particular, although it explained these could be introduced.

Customers are asked to shop as normal and the retailer will constantly review stock levels and introduce limits if necessary.

“From time to time, there will be limits to the amount of one item you can buy,” a statement said.

“As a responsible retailer, we always have purchase limits on certain medicines.

“For all other items, we will only do this if necessary, and the limits will be clearly visible when you pick up your product or view it online.

“Customers will be unable to scan more than the item limit when they reach the till, so it is always worth only buying what you need to avoid any confusion when you try to check out.”


It is up to individual stores to set any limits, the retailer revealed.

The discount retailer explained it has good stock levels and shoppers should only buy what they need.

However, restrictions could be put in place if necessary and that can be decided by store managers.

A spokesperson commented: “We want to reassure our customers that we are not currently experiencing any product shortages and have good availability in our stores.

“We hope all customers remain mindful of others when shopping with us to ensure everyone continues to have access to the products they need.

“Nonetheless, it is at our store managers discretion, should customers start to bulk-buy, to limit the purchasing of specific items at that store.”


Previously having limits on essential products, Aldi has stated it has no restrictions in place just now.

The Aldi website added: “We have eased the product limitations in our stores as the restrictions put in place were temporary and we don’t feel these are still necessary.

“Thanks to the tireless efforts of our suppliers and colleagues, and to customers for buying only what they need, product availability is good, making it easier to shop for vulnerable people and those who are self-isolating.”
