Many people are familiar with the term ‘birthstone’ and how it’s associated with a monthly calendar. The origin of the 12 birthstones has a long and symbolic history that dates back thousands of years – often bearing both biblical and astrological meanings. But before birthstones became a popular present to give, many would wear, carry or hold them to bring special energy. Crystal expert Emma Lucy Knowles explained the story behind birthstones and revealed what each one symbolises during an appearance on ITV’s This Morning.
What are birthstones?
Birthstones are a popular international trend rooted in centuries worth of tradition.
The modern-day birthstone has several paths of origin – biblical, astrological, cultural and even ancient.
Emma explained: “In the 8th and 9th Century, you had 12 stones, believed to represent the 12 calendar months and carry one a month as a symbol of protection.
“Crystals were also used in Egypt to ward off low or negative energy and protect the wearer.”
What can your birthstones do for you?
Wearing or carrying your birthstone replicates the energy of stars at the time of your birth.
This can boost your vibration and aura – drawing in more of your vibe towards you and projecting it to other people.
Emma added: “The property of that crystal can assist the person born in each month with qualities they have or things they may get carried away with.”
Modern and traditional birthstones
There is a modern birthstone list established by the National Association of Jewellers (a standardised list based on custom and practicalities) and a traditional birthstone list that has historically been associated with each month. Often people choose between the two based on the look and feel of the crystal associated with their month.
Birthstones and their properties:
Emma said: “If you’re born in January, you’re said to be full of grace, a very loyal person, so what the garnet allows you to do is have faith in who you’re being loyal to.
“Often we get too carried away and feel ‘am I being too loyal here?’
“Again it allows you to the direction your energy and power of intuition in that space.”
The crystal expert revealed: “Their energy is someone with a big, open mind.
“What’s great about amethyst is it allows us to not get too drunk on our thinking and align our energy.
March: Aquamarine (traditional birthstone: Bloodstone)
“One of my favourites,” Emma remarked. “[If you’re born] in March, you’re a very creative person.
“Aquamarine is a great piece for when you get irritated, again when you are creative, you need balance and the aquamarine is going to help you bring balance to yourself.”
Emma continued: “The diamond is just fabulous. It’s all about commitment, people who are affectionate, it allows people with quite wild emotions to really get a lot of inner clarity from that, so it doesn’t feel like you’re getting carried away – fine-tune or pinpoint, precision clarity with your emotions.”
“Emerald is a crystal that allows those people who are incredibly fertile – and we’re talking about in terms of pregnancy, and energy – it’s a crystal that’s going to help you along the way with starting projects,” she added.
June: Alexandrite (traditional birthstone: Pearl)
“As they say, pearls of wisdom,” the expert said. “You’re a very wise and energetic person if you’re born in June and you’re said to be fortunate and lucky.
“So around that time, you’re going to need a lot of protection, so that’s why this crystal helps us feel very protected in luck and fortune.”
Emma explained: “King of the gemstones – it is king, it promotes passion and love, and allows you to really show off all those qualities within yourself if you’re born under that month.”
August: Peridot (or Spinel, traditional birthstone: Sardonyx)
“[Peridot is a] beautiful green – green is the colour of the heart, so this is a person or crystal for someone who lives through the heart,” she mentioned.
“So if you live through the heart and show that off and let that shine, Peridot is great for you.”
Emma said: “Sapphires are really special because it helps ward off evil and we’re talking about low-level energy too.
“When you’re born in September, you’re said to be really powerful and lucky.
“So what the Sapphire helps do is to help you remain protected in that space, from a wandering eye or jealous eye, that is the crystal to help you with that.”
October: Tourmaline (tradition birthstone: Opal)
“Again, comes in a range of colours but the pink is especially beautiful because it’s about purity, hope and truth,” Emma revealed.
“Sometimes there’s that sense that when we’re hopeful, we can be quite naive, but the beauty of tourmaline is it allows us to remain confident in our trusting of our heart, that we’re not being naive, we’re being true to ourselves.”
November: Golden Topaz (tradition birthstone: Topaz)
The expert commented: “In November, you’re the person who ends the battles, the peacekeeper in the family and this is a crystal that allows you to be strong within that space, allows you to feel incredibly durable.”
December: Blue Zircon (Turquoise)
“December you’re all about friendship, courage and beauty and this allows you to have peace of mind that you’re the person bringing it all together,” Emma concluded. “It’s a real together stone.”
