The Tory MP said the UK had to accelerate plans to become “more self-reliant so we don’t have these chronic shortages”. He added: “It is not green to stop using our natural gas but import other countries’ natural gas in liquid form on big tankers coming from halfway around the world.

“We need to put in more electricity-generated capacity in this country.

“If you rely too much on wind and the wind doesn’t blow, there is a nasty shortage. Can we make sure we rely on our own domestic primary energy rather than importing it?”

The Nuclear Industry Association said it offers the reliable, low-carbon alternative that can “stabilise the UK’s energy system over the long-term”.

The trade body’s chief executive Tom Greatrex said: “The current crisis will become the new normal without nuclear to provide the backbone of clean, reliable British electricity. It’s time for Government to bring forward a financing model for new nuclear.”

Other experts suggest extracting more gas from the North Sea which, together with Irish Sea fields, provides 40 per cent of the nation’s supplies.
