Is the name Gary making a comeback? Naming site reveals the surprising trending monikers of 2022 – including David, Sarah and Thomas
- Gary appears on list of ‘trending’ names published by website UK Baby Names
- Others to make the cut include Paul, John, Peter, David, Matthew and Thomas
- For girls, Sarah is included in the list – with the less surprising Emma and Olivia
The name Gary appears to be making a comeback for a new generation of baby boys.
The moniker, which had fallen out of favour with millennial parents, was included on a list of ‘trending’ baby names published by website UK Baby Names.
A few other unusual names for newborns also appeared on the list: John, Ian and Paul.
Other traditional names on the trending list for boys are: James, David, Peter, Jack, Oliver, Thomas and Matthew.
For girls, Sarah makes the cut – with the less shocking Olivia and Emma.
However, despite apparently trending with parents, Gary doesn’t make the top 100 names overall just yet.

Meanwhile, UK Baby Names has also shared a short list of names most popular with its users.
Paul appears again for boys, alongside Eugene, Percy, Lars, Alan, Artie and Bernard.
The girls names Kimberly, Claire, Cassidy, Michelle and Madeline are mentioned.
Last month, the most unpopular baby names so far for 2022 were revealed, with Kristen, Suzanne, and Lorraine in the rankings.
For the boys, Bill, Chad and Stuart were included as monikers which are failing to inspire new parents.
The list, released by baby experts Bella Baby, used statistics from Baby Name UK and Google Trends to collate the results.
The most unpopular girls names included the Italian and English origin Angela, ranked at 683 out of 5493.
Kimberly – meaning ‘from the wood of the royal forest’ and ‘from the royal fortress meadow’ – came in at 1,013, and Alexa – a form of the male name Alexander – was 1687.
The name Nicole – of Greek origin – also failed to impress, and placed at 279.
Geographical Japanese name Kobe made the boys’ list at 298 of 5493, as did Jeffrey at 1825 out of 4608.
Nigel – meaning ‘champion’ – also fell out of favour, as did Ashton and Graham.
