The coronavirus pandemic has meant we are all watching what we spend a little more.
For those looking to save the pennies, a thrifty mum – who lost her job earlier this year – has revealed a handy hack which cuts her weekly shopping bill in half.
Kayleigh Fisher would usually spend £60 a week at Tesco or Asda on food for her and her family – however she now spends just £30.
She told LatestDeals.co.uk: ‘During lockdown I was made redundant from my work as a cleaner which impacted how much money I had to spend on food.’
The simple trick? Making the most of the yellow sticker items.
Kayleigh, from Somerset, explains that she would never shop the reduced yellow sticker food before the pandemic, but now they have become her ‘saviour.’
She added: ‘I’ve only been really shopping for reduced items when I was made redundant as before it wasn’t a regular thing.
‘Yellow stickers are my saviours especially at the end of the month when money is tight.
‘I’m pretty good at budgeting but there’s always that one unexpected payment that causes us to be short.
‘I’m always looking for ways to save money so I can do more things with my family.’
After Kayleigh buys the reduced items, she stores them in the freezer so they’re ready for use when she needs them the most.
She adds that Morrisons, in particular, is great for these deals.
Kayleigh said: ‘I found Morrisons to have the best yellow stickers but if I don’t go there I regularly shop at Aldi or Lidl, as a £100 shop in Tesco or ASDA is about £60 in Aldi or Lidl.
‘For example, one week I went in to get a week’s worth of shopping which would have cost about £40 but I only spent £15 thanks to the yellow stickers, so I got a good saving of £25 that I can now put back for Christmas shopping.’
However, Kayleigh stresses that she only buys reduced items that she would normally buy full price – so doesn’t stockpile.
She adds that it can be helpful to ask your local supermarket what time they start reducing so you can arrive ready for the bargains.
