Meghan Markle is best known today as the Duchess of Sussex (despite her former acting career). As Prince Harry’s wife, and a member of the royal family, her style has taken a turn towards the regal (pun intended), as her royal garb must present an air of sophistication while retaining a necessary human touch.
If Markle’s choice of attire is too highfalutin, no casual conversation will remove the imaginary pedestal people will begin to envision. However, if her clothes are too casual, too sexy, or “not enough,” she will fail to match those surrounding her. While Meghan Markle’s fashion sense, as a royal, has proved enviable, she’s been boasting a strong sense of style since way before that simple, yet stunning wedding gown.
Before Meghan Markle became the Duchess of Sussex, she starred in Suits as Rachel Zane. Rocking $500 Tom Ford skirts while in character, her sophisticated and sexy aesthetic became the talk of the town. However – from Rachel Zane to the Duchess of Sussex – in some way, we always see Meghan Markle “in character.” What would Markle choose to wear if she didn’t have to retain a particular image, or mesh into a particular role?

Luckily for us, Meghan Markle revealed her “style spirit animal” during an interview with Glamour Magazine. According to Markle, her personal style – while still fashionable – is a little bit less dressy.
Meghan Markle on her “style spirit animal” and the outfit she would wear to a dinner party
During an interview with Glamour magazine, Meghan Markle explained that, while she was working on Suits, fans would spot her in the street and ask about her character’s clothing. Unfortunately, Markle explained, she always had to give it back! Meghan Markle goes onto explain that her personal style is very different from Rachel Zane’s (and from what we’ve come to see, also quite different from what she wears as the Duchess of Sussex).
Glamour Magazine asked Meghan Markle, If you were going out for a dinner date, what would you normally wear? Markle stated:
“I would probably wear jeans, a nice top, and a blazer. Basically, what Emmanuelle Alt would wear! She is my style spirit animal! Her and Geraldine Saglio. I have now started to do that thing where you tear out pictures for inspiration of how you’re going to dress for the day.”
As this interview occurred a few years back, it’s unlikely that the Duchess still tears pictures out of Magazines; however, who knows? She may tear and hand over the picture to her assistant! As for her style spirit animals, who are Alt and Saglio?
Who are Emmanuelle Alt and Geraldine Saglio – Meghan Markle’s favorite fashion icons?
Meghan Marle cites Emmanuelle Alt and Geraldine Saglio as sources of inspiration when it comes to fashion. So, who are they? Emmanuelle Alt is Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Paris and became the fashion director of the magazine in 2000.
Geraldine Saglio is a French stylist based in Paris. You can see clips of her latest projects on managementartists.com. Saglio also serves as a fashion editor at Vogue Paris.
So, based on these two aesthetics, the one question lingering over everyone’s heads remains: would Meghan Markle dress differently if she wasn’t the Duchess of Sussex? Does she feel trapped in her current wardrobe?
