I said 'I love you' but my boyfriend didn't say it back

DEAR DEIDRE: I TOLD my boyfriend I loved him but he didn’t say it back.

We’re both 23 and have been together for four months after meeting on a dating app.

The sex is the best of my life and I feel I can talk to him about anything.

He has even given me the confidence to go back to college. I’m sure he’s my soulmate.

But even though we spend almost every night together he won’t call me his girlfriend officially.

Last night, we were lying in bed after making love and I told him: “I think I’m falling in love with you.”

His response was: “Wow, those are big words. Why do you think that is?”

I’ve never told anyone I love them before. Now I feel insecure and stupid.

DEIDRE SAYS: Saying “I love you” first always makes you feel vulnerable. And when the person you’re with doesn’t say it back it can be upsetting and confusing.

It doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel the same or that he won’t in time, just that he isn’t ready to say it yet.

Try to be patient and let the relationship progress naturally. My support pack Learning About Relationships will help.
