Dishwasher cleaning is an easily forgotten chore people often prefer to miss out on. While dishwashers quickly and efficiently scrub dirty plates, they have to flush food through filters. These can get backed up by food particles which, if left too long, can regurgitate grime.

How do you clean a dishwasher?

Ideally, as a dishwasher cleans pots and plans, it should also be cleaning itself.

But unfortunately, the dirt has to go somewhere, and grease, detergent and other sludge must travel through the system’s filtration.

Not only will this mean people struggle to get their kitchenware clean, but it could also result in costly repairs.

Those planning to clean a poorly functioning dishwasher should start with the filtration system.

Clare Edwards, a home economist with Smeg, revealed people should try to clean the filter regularly.

She said: “Cleaning the filter in your dishwasher’s base regularly is crucial.

“This collects food particles and residue and can not only produce an odour if not cleaned but will also reduce the dishwasher’s performance.”

“You should also remove the spray arms every once in a while and clean these separately.”

Doing so, Ms Edwards said, allows people to remove “fruit pips and small food particles” caught in the jets.

People can clean the whole unit with a dishwasher cleaner.

They should find one which “removes both grease and odours”, but “a few wedges of lemon added to the cutlery basket or tray” will freshen it up as well, according to Ms Edwards.

If people want to avoid thorough cleans, daily action prevents sludge buildup.

They should wipe the dishwasher door down with a damp sponge or cloth.

This will wipe away any developing residue over the controls.

People can also make sure the filter doesn’t get clogged up by cleaning it regularly.

Some bits of food from each dishwashing cycle could get caught in the filtration after every wash.

These usually include larger particles such as beans or pieces of meat.

They will usually catch under the bottom rack, so all people need to do, is pull it out and extract leftover food.

All people need is a paper towel to wipe down the inside and prevent any developing odours.
