Coconut oil is known for its incredible moisturising properties, as well as being an excellent cleaner and polisher to use around the house. Baking soda has been used for decades as an easy alternative to shop-bought chemical household cleaners, but it can also be used for cosmetic reasons
But can you mix the two together? The answer is – yes you can.
Mixing baking soda and coconut oil is completely safe and the two do not interact dangerously at all.
According to OrganicFacts.net, using both together can be good for your hair, skin and mouth in a number of ways.
It explains: “Baking soda is an amphoteric substance, meaning that it can react with both acids and bases, helping to balance the pH balance in either direction.
“It is essentially the ultimate neutral substance, and for people who have high acidity in their bodies or on their skin, this can be hugely beneficial.
“Acidic conditions are perfect for the development of infection and illness, so it is important to have the right balance on the body’s largest organ.
“Bringing coconut oil into the mix makes the preparation even stronger.”
There are a number of ways you can use coconut oil and baking soda.
Maintaining a healthy pH
Baking soda will react with either alkaline or acidic compounds – which can bring your skin back to a healthy neutral pH level.
Coconut oil is rich in nutrients and is an outstanding moisturiser, and can help deliver an immune response to any infections that can develop on acidic skin.
It also helps reduce inflamed skin and stimulates cell growth.

What is baking soda used for? What can you clean with baking soda?
Coconut oil has astringent properties which help promote elasticity and get rid of free radicals which usually cause a cellular breakdown, thus causing premature ageing.
Mixing it with baking soda in low levels will help unclog pores and rebalance your pH.
While these are no substitute for medical remedies for issues like acne, they can help clear up break-out-prone skin.
While coconut oil is used across the world on its own as an excellent moisturising hair mask, combining it with baking soda can also help remove any excess gunk and build up from your hair.
Baking soda is a great tonic for your locks – it can remove excess oil from the scalp and help prevent dandruff due to its pH balancing nature.
Mix together in a 1:1 ratio for best results.
