There are several bank holidays throughout the year, marking specific dates like Easter and Christmas Day, as well as spring and summer holidays. These bring a three-day break for many Britons, with several workplaces and schools closing to commemorate the day.
Is there a bank holiday this weekend?
Despite a bank holiday already having taken place this month, this weekend is another bank holiday.
Monday, May 31 is what’s known as the spring bank holiday.
This means shops will have different hours, children will be off school and several businesses like banks will shut up shop for the day.

Those receiving payments like Universal Credit may be paid early to compensate for the bank holiday.
And for some workplaces which have payday on the last working day of the month, wages may instead be paid on Friday, May 28.
This bank holiday, restaurants and bars are permitted to serve Britons indoors as lockdown restrictions lifted earlier this month.
So many may be heading out for meals, or even to the cinema this weekend to celebrate.
Schoolchildren are also on half-term next week, with many schools having a break between Monday, May 31 and Friday, June 4.
What is the weather like this bank holiday?
May has been an incredibly wet month for the UK, with heavy rain for much of the country.
However, conditions are looking up for the bank holiday, with sunny skies on the way.
Sky News weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said: “There is more settled weather to come very soon.
“From the middle of this week pressure will become higher, leading to drier and brighter conditions for many.
“It’ll feel warmer than recently, too, with temperatures returning to around average for the time of year.
“There will still be some scattered showers, but they will be fewer and far between than recently and lighter.
“Some rain is also likely for northern and western areas at times – but overall, most places will be largely dry for the rest of the week.”
