Aldi shopper suggests paying £1 extra to use a slow checkout

ALDI shoppers are furious after one customer suggested paying £1 extra for slower checkouts.

The supermarket is known for its super quick tills, which the grocer says are 40% quicker than rivals.

In fact, Aldi has previously joked that its staff are “faster than 5G” thanks to using extra big barcodes to get items through quickly.

But not all shoppers are a fan of the speedy service, with some complaining that it makes them “feel rushed”.

Some customers have even set up a Facebook page called the Aldi Checkout Challenge where they share their experiences at the store tills.

Writing on Facebook, one Aldi shopper asked fellow shoppers if they'd be willing to pay £1 extra for slower checkouts.

  • Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards

Posting on the Aldi UK Shoppers page, she asked: "Aldi customers, I understand many of you HATE the speed of the checkouts.

"Question: would you pay an extra £1 in your shopping for the luxury of being able to pack at your own pace at the checkout?

"Or do you believe you should be able to pack your shopping at the checkout regardless of the supermarket?"

But some shoppers say they refuse to pay extra for slower tills, with the post quickly racking up more than 1,200 comments.

One shopper said: "No, I don't have to pay a £1 at any other supermarket to shop."

Another said: "Why pay £1? I just take my time and let it pile up until it falls onto their lap and then they wait for me."

A third said: "Why would it cost an extra pound?"

Other shoppers said they like the speedy service as it means they spend less time in checkout queues.

Some also praised the packing benches which Aldi provides.

Shoppers are asked to use these benches, which are located next to the tills, instead of packing at the checkout.

One customer said: "I actually agree with the packing benches. It’s such a better way to pack the shopping."

Another said: "I prefer to pack in the packing area. Calmer way of doing it."

A third added: "I like it. I'm in and out in no time."

Aldi has no plans to start charging customers for slower checkout tills.

The supermarket also told The Sun that its till staff will always slow down if shoppers ask.

As well as helping the flow of customers, Aldi says its checkouts are speedy to help keep costs low for shoppers.

By getting customers out of the door quicker, it means staff can focus on other jobs around stores.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Our fast and efficient checkout process helps to deliver amazing quality food at unbeatable Aldi prices.

“However, we appreciate that every customer is different, and we ask colleagues to ensure they use their discretion to work at a pace suitable for each individual.”
