90s trends you forgot about are making a comeback for spring – jelly sandals to butterfly clips

It’s hard to believe the 1990s were 30 years ago – does anyone else feeling super old at that thought?

What’s making us feel even older is seeing some of the trends we adored growing up coming back around for the second time. Yes, Spring 2022 is all about ’90s nostalgia.

Whilst there are some ’90s items we were glad to see the back of, there are others we’re more than ready to welcome back, and a few we’d forgotten about entirely.

So whether you’re trying these outfits for the first time, or you want to revisit them, here are the ’90s trends making serious comebacks in the coming months…

Chunky Flip Flops

Platform flip flops have made a return onto the high street, after being a massive trend back in the ’90s.

Whilst they might not be the most practical of shoe (we don’t advice running in these) – they look adorable and are on our hot list for summer – we love these affordable buys from Asos.

Handkerchief Top

These hanky hem crop tops were the ultimate party-wear for teens.

Back in the day, we would have paired with low waisted jeans and sparkly hair gems, but as 2022 adults we are sticking to wearing with high-waisted trousers and a sleeker hairstyle.

Cargo Pants

We can’t talk about ’90s trends without mentioning cargo pants.

Pop stars such as Aaliyah, TLC and the Spice Girls were often seen in the oversized trousers, pairing them with a teeny tiny crop top and chunky trainers.

We think this Stradivarius pair that are slightly slimmer in the leg are super wearable for 2022.

Tie-Front Tops

Tie-front tops and cardigans were an essential in every ’90s girl’s wardrobe- whether you were at the shopping centre with friends or off to a pop concert.

This mesh brown number with flute sleeves could be straight out of Tammy Girl.

The trend might not be for the faint-hearted but there is no escaping it this spring.

Jelly Sandals

Jelly sandals are back and cuter than ever – plus, they’ve been given a serious style upgrade for the year of 2022.

Thankfully we aren’t seeing as many caged styles this time around, and instead there are lots of fun and playful mule versions like this funky floral pair. We’ll be wearing them with mini dresses for summer.

They come in other colourways too, including monochrome if you prefer muted colours.

Butterfly Clips

We don’t make the rules, but any teenager that wore butterfly clips in their hair in the ’90s was cooler than can be. Style icons Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were big fans – enough said.

They’re back for the second time around and this multicoloured pack are perfect for an easy, cute up do.

Micro Sunnies

Bad news for big sunglasses fans – the 90s micro sunglasses trend is huge this year and we’re all for it.

These teeny sunnies make us immediately think of Julia Roberts in the 1999 cult classic Notting Hill – we are adding straight to our basket and you should too.
