In tandem with the launch of ticket sales for The Last Duel, 20th Century Studios has unveiled the opening scene of the Ridley Scott-directed epic, which stars Jodie Comer, Matt Damon and Adam Driver.
Based on the book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jagger, the film centers on a duel-to-the-death between the Norman knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon) and squire Jacques Le Gris (Driver), who is accused of raping the former’s wife. Their battle will decide whether Carrouges’ wife Marguerite (Comer) will be killed for lying, or if she was telling the truth.
The opening visual shows Comer’s character getting dressed during a rainy day ahead of the life-or-death duel, while Carrouges and Le Gris assemble their armor under tents in a Parisian arena. The two men then mount their horses, grab their weapons and charge full speed toward each other; and just as the action is about the unfold, the scene cuts off.
The screenplay was written by Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener. Scott previously helmed the 2000 historical drama Gladiator, for which he won an Oscar for Best Picture.
The Last Duel will premiere in theaters on October 15. Watch the opening scene above.
