A new museum has opened in Bali, which is dedicated to profiling design as a tool for future thinking. Named the “Museum of Space Available”, the space has been created by the creative platform Space Available alongside Indonesian practice Sidarta and Sandjaja, and plays host to a roster of exhibitions exploring everything from biodesign to radical upcycling.
Museum of Space Available was founded by the creative platform of the same name, which wanted to create a physical space to present its own work but also its collaborations with designers the world over. Inside, the two-floor space includes an upcycling bar and recycling station, at which any of Space Available’s products can be repaired for free.
When it came to the architecture, the skills of Sidarta and Sandjaja were called upon. When Space Available acquired the building, it was completely derelict. Working alongside the architecture practice, the team has transformed it into a flexible space with neutral interiors to make it the perfect backdrop for the work it plans to profile. On its exterior, over 200,000 waste-plastic bottles have been used to create a facade displaying the museum’s name. These bottles were recycled in partnership with Indonesian circular firm Robries, and aim to set the tone for the museum before a visitor has even walked through its doors.
“While museums around the world play a vital role in showcasing the past, we wanted to create a space that explores the future,” Space Available says. “We believe the future of design is circular and regenerative and we wanted to create an experience that archives and explores the visions and systems that could help reshape our lives going forward.”
In time with the opening, Space Available curated a show named “Plastic People”, which explores the story of synthetic plastics, and how we can develop circular systems that “challenge destructive linear thinking”. On show until August 26, digital and physical sculptures are used to illustrate the importance of changing our plastic habits, and the profits will go towards the creation of Space Available’s new recycling facility in Java.
